Perilla, or Shiso, is a genus of annual herb that is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae. In mild climates the plant reseeds itself. There are both green-leafed and purple-leafed varieties which are generally recognized as separate species by botanists.

Perilla had a significant anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory action on them and controlled allergic responses through reducing levels of white blood cells, prostaglandins, histamine, cytokines and IgE. In addition, perilla extract improved the symptoms of atopic dermatitis in about 70 percent of mice treated, demonstrating anti-allergy properties, both topically and internally.
